As the big pink website countdown ticks away and reminds us how fast WikiVet LIVE! 2018 is approaching, the enormity of the task ahead is beginning to really dawn on us. The conference tagline is ‘Veterinary Education; Around the world, Around the clock’, and we are certainly working hard, literally around the clock! We are now in the final stages of organising the event, and working on all the finer details, to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible on the day.
WikiVet LIVE! 2018 is the first ever free online veterinary student conference of its kind and the amount of time and effort which has gone into planning and organising the event is incredible. There has been so much more involved than we initially imagined, and so many more hurdles to jump and factors to consider. The simple fact that the conference runs over 3 different time zones within a 24 hour period has meant that our committee meetings and planning sessions have happened at all times of day and night, and there have been a few near misses with daylight savings and similar clock changings where it has all got very confusing! We have all learnt to be very specific about the time zones in which we are talking!
In each regional stream there are 10 different veterinary topics; 7 of these talks will be given by experts in their field and 3 shorter talks will be given by students talking about their experiences throughout their undergraduate degrees. This works out as a total of 32 speakers (for those of you quick at maths, we have a couple of co-presenting teams!) which is a lot of very busy people to try and coordinate! We are also working hard with our sponsors, stream coordinators and students to promote the event and create the conference materials and viewing platform.
You may have noticed that our social media pages are also buzzing with conference information and hype. With all the work that has gone into this over the last year, our biggest priority now is to make sure that vets and students all over the world are aware of it and register. It is completely free to register – this should be done in advance (we can’t offer an early bird discount on a free event, but we do have some prizes and competitions running via Facebook for early registration!). Some schools will be organising viewing events for students who would prefer to attend with friends, and make more of a social occasion of it, and we will be providing details about these nearer the time. There is still time to organise a local LIVE! Event, so please get in touch with us if you are keen!
To make all our hard work and lack of sleep worthwhile, and for WikiVet LIVE! 2018 to benefit as many people as possible all over the world, we need to ensure that it is disseminated far and wide. After all the driving purpose of WikiVet LIVE! is to give all those involved with the veterinary profession around the world a fantastic opportunity to learn from the very best in the field – and all for free!!
