Dan completed his BSc in Biology from the State University of New York, Geneseo in 1994. He graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. Following graduation he completed a Rotating Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at The Animal Medical Center, New York City. He became a Resident in Clinical Nutrition and in Emergency and Critical Care in 1999 at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, North Grafton, MA. Following completion of his residency he became a Research Assistant Professor at Tufts, and came to the RVC in 2005.
In 2010, he also become Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
Dan is Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at the Royal Veterinary College. He is Acting Medical Director of the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals - Small Animal Referrals. He is also Director of the ECC Residency Programme, the Director of Intramural Rotations and Year 4 of the BVetMed Programme and Director of the RVC's Level 1 Veterinary Trauma Centre.
